Faster, Stronger, Happier

For the past 7 years I have had a love affair with all things health and fitness.  Between 2008 and 2010, I was able to lose 100 pounds through eating locally-sourced organic foods, bike commuting and exercising 5 days a week.  I continued my fitness regimen throughout my second pregnancy (in 2011) including running a minimum of 4 miles a day. I did not want to undo all the hard work and gains that I had made over the past few years!

In 2013, I decided that I wanted to take my fitness to the next level, so I added weightlifting to my repertoire. The problem that I continued to encounter at my gym was that there were only 2 barbells and the area reserved for weightlifting was always crowded with people standing around chatting. I asked the fitness staff to show me how to use the Smith Machine for squatting (since I could never get my hands on a barbell), but I was told that they were not allowed to give instruction or advice.  That just didn’t make sense to me!  So I spent many nights reading and watching how-tos on the internet, bookmarking my favorites so that I could I train myself at the gym.

I had heard of CrossFit and was intrigued right away.  However, I didn’t know what type of commitment I could make to a set “class schedule” because I have a teen and a toddler.  My fix was to print a bunch of WODs off of Pinterest and try to squeeze them into my schedule as my toddler napped.  Well, somehow I always managed to wake him up and he would order me to stop exercising…so that idea was a flop!

Eventually, I noticed that my clothes were continually becoming tighter and my weight was going up.  (I’m not talking muscle!)  I attributed it to hypothyroid, as I have an under-active thyroid.  I upped my workout intensity and ate a very strict gluten-free/vegetarian diet, but it wasn’t helping me. I wanted to mix-up my routine, but the gym that I went to didn’t have the space or equipment I needed. I decided that if I wanted to feel better, look better and take my athleticism to the next level I needed help.  I needed a coach or a personal trainer.  That was going to be expensive as hell, so CrossFit popped back into my mind.

I looked online and stumbled across SRSC because they are a member of the Sonoma County GoLocal Cooperative (which is an organization that I really believe in) and decided to sign up for a free consultation.  After learning more about the gym and the programs they offer, I couldn’t see myself going back to my gym – I wanted what SRSC offered so badly!

My family and I re-organized our lives so that I would have the time to attend scheduled classes and doing that has changed my life for the better in more ways than I had even imagined.  In the past 6 months, I have amazed myself and my family.  I changed my diet to almost 100% paleo and attend 3 CrossFit classes and 2 strength classes a week.  I always give 100%, even on the days I don’t feel 100% and everyday I go home feeling like I’ve accomplished something and fulfilled.  I am faster and stronger than before, I have more endurance, I sleep great, my mood is stable, I feel confident, and every hypothyroid symptom that I was suffering from is gone.  Almost all the weight I have lost since joining has been fat, I can see my muscles (even in my stomach!) and I consider myself an athlete.  SRSC’s programming is the real deal and if you stick with the program, you WILL see results!
